A Star Is Born

A movie star helps a young singer-actress find fame, even as age and alcoholism send his own career into a downward spiral. Musical films started almost as soon as sync sound was introduced in Hollywood in 1929. Starting as an outgrowth of vaudeville, Hollywood and the rest of the world quickly developed a universal language of singing and dancing in films that continues to this day. From Fred Astaire in “Top Hat” and Gene Kelly in “Singin’ in the Rain,” to “Wicked” to the latest from Bollywood, musicals have entranced audiences for a hundred years and show no sign of losing their appeal any time soon. Join us as we take a tour through the history of musicals on film from Hollywood to the rest of the world.
